Where can I cash a check?

In brief

Walmart cashes payroll, government and tax refund checks for at most $4 up to $1,000. A bank will usually cash a check written on its own accounts (Bank of America charges non-customers $8 over $50). Apps such as Ingo charge $17 on an $850 paycheck for money in minutes, or nothing if you wait 10 days.

Choose your state to see the legal maximum a check-cashing store may charge (where we have verified it), and to hide places that don’t operate there.

Fees are the ones each company publishes. “Up to” means the company publishes a maximum (Walmart’s fee is “subject to applicable law” and can be lower in your state). Places that take your check but don’t publish a fee are listed under the results, not hidden.

Who takes which check

Not every place takes every check. Personal checks and money orders are where most places draw the line. A tick means the place says it takes that kind of check; a cross means it says it doesn’t; a dot means it doesn’t say.

Before you go

  • Bring photo ID. Every store and check casher here asks for it. Kroger also asks for a Social Security or Taxpayer Identification Number; Ingo checks your name against your Social Security Number.
  • Don’t sign a money order early. USPS says to sign a postal money order at the counter, in front of the clerk.
  • Check the limit. Walmart’s is $5,000 per check in most states ($7,500 from January to April); Kroger’s is $5,000; Cash App’s is $3,500; Chime’s is $2,000 (U.S. Treasury checks up to $5,000).
  • On an app, “in minutes” costs more. Ingo charges $42.50 on an $850 check that isn’t payroll or government, against free if you wait 10 days.
  • Ask about the fee before you hand the check over at any place that doesn’t publish one: Kroger, Publix, ACE Cash Express, Check Into Cash, Moneytree, Speedy Cash, Chase, U.S. Bank, Wells Fargo, Chime, PayPal, Western Union.

Questions

Where can I cash a check for free?

Free options exist but they are slow or narrow. Cash App deposits paychecks, personal, cashier's and government checks free (up to $3,500 a check, funded in up to 6 business days). Ingo Money is free if you wait 10 days for the money. A USPS money order can be cashed free at any Post Office. Bank of America charges non-customers nothing for a check of $50 or less drawn on one of its personal accounts.

Where can I cash a check without a bank account?

At Walmart (at most $4 for a pre-printed check up to $1,000), at a Kroger-family Money Services desk, at the bank the check is written on, at a check-cashing store, or in an app that loads the money onto a prepaid card or PayPal, such as Ingo Money.

Where can I cash a payroll check?

Payroll checks are the easiest kind to cash: Kroger, Publix, Walmart, ACE Cash Express, Amscot, Check Into Cash, Moneytree, Pay-O-Matic, Speedy Cash, Cash App, Ingo Money, and Venmo all list them. On an $850 paycheck, Walmart charges at most $4 and Ingo charges $17 for money in minutes.

Where can I cash a check on Sunday?

Kroger says many of its Money Services locations are open on Sundays and most holidays. Walmart lists Supercenter hours of 6am to 11pm but doesn't publish separate hours for its Money Service Center. Apps such as Ingo work any day, though the money may take longer to arrive.

Which is cheapest?

It depends on the check type, the amount and your state. Use the calculator above: it shows each place's published fee for your exact check, cheapest first, and lists the places that take your check but don't publish a fee.
